On January 25, 2021, the Executive Council of The Episcopal Church approved the grant applications recommended to them by the 2021 Young Adult and Campus Ministry Grant review team.  A total of $133,516 was awarded to 20 grant recipients from across The Episcopal Church.

Young Adult and Campus Ministry Grants provide funding for dioceses, congregations, and community college/tribal college/university campuses that engage or seek to engage, with young adults on and off college campuses.

“The Young Adult and Campus Ministry grants give communities across the church the opportunity to dream something new as they minister with young adults on and off college campuses,” said the Rev. Shannon Kelly, director for the Department of Faith Formation and officer for Young Adult and Campus Ministries. “Ministry with young adults has to be responsive to young adults wherever they are on their journey. Evangelism means striving to meet them where they are and journey together in the Jesus Movement.”

Six Campus Ministry Grants, two Leadership Grants, five Project Grants and seven Young Adult Ministry Grants were awarded to 18 dioceses.

Campus Ministry Grants provide seed money to assist in the start-up of new, innovative campus ministries or to enhance a current ministry, such as The Ministry Partners in the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma who will create new digital ministries in partnership with established worshipping communities. These digital ministries will be tailored to young people not belonging to or connected with a Church and will be constructed to help young people navigate faith through non-traditional experiences.

Leadership Grants establish new, restore dormant, or reenergize current campus ministries. St. Anselm’s Episcopal Church in the Episcopal Diocese of Tennessee will relaunch their ministry with local Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s) by rebuilding the Church’s presence in the HBCU communities, partnering with ecumenical ministries, and providing pastoral care to the student population.

Project Grants provide money for a one-time project to enhance and positively impact a campus or young adult ministry. Canterbury Fellowship of the Episcopal Diocese of Wyoming, a young adult and campus ministry, and its partners St. Matthew’s Cathedral and Feeding Laramie Valley will establish a community garden and an outdoor worship space to further advocate for and contribute to a resilient, local food system.

Young Adult Ministry Grants provide seed money to assist in the start-up of new, innovative young adult ministries or enhance current ministries. Ascension School Camp and Conference Center, in the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Oregon, will offer a creative internship opportunity for ten young adults over a ten-week period in the summer in order to equip and build up a generation of land stewards and leaders. They will focus on their core values of human dignity, creation care, and spiritual formation.

Grant Recipients

A total of 40 grant applications were received, of which 15 were Leadership Grants, 12 Campus Ministry Grants, five Project Grants, and 8 Young Adult Ministry Grants. Application requests totaled $584,816. The grants, which are subject to their sponsoring dioceses having completed their 2020 assessment payments, are listed below, by category.

This process is an invitation to consider how The Episcopal Church can minister with young adults on and off college campuses (including community colleges and tribal college campuses, non-traditional degree programs), in the military, and those who are not in college.

All applications must have prior approval by the bishop of the diocese in which the ministry is to be located.

“These grants help Episcopal ministries live into an expanded understanding of what it means to work with young adults on and off college campuses,” said the Rev. Shannon Kelly, director for the department of faith formation and officer for young adult and campus ministry, “These growing and innovative ministries show the church new ways to engage mission and ministry to meet the needs of young adults.”

A total of $133,000 is available for this cycle, with a total of $400,000 available during this triennium. These grants are for the 2020-2021 academic year.

“Ministry with young adults on and off college campuses is one way the church is raising up the leaders of now and the leaders of the future,” added Kelly. “It is an honor and a privilege to walk alongside these ministries as they seek to do ministry in ways that engage their communities in such unique ways.”

Episcopal ministries or ecumenical ministries with an Episcopal presence engaged in or seeking a new relationship with young adults on or off college campuses are invited to apply. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, each grant application needs to address how this project or ministry can be safely and reasonably done with COVID-19 safety precautions in place. The 2020 Young Adult and Campus Ministry Grant recommendations were approved by the Executive Council of The Episcopal Church during their February meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah. A total of $132,638 was awarded to 21 grant recipients from across The Episcopal Church.

Young Adult and Campus Ministry Grants provide funding for dioceses, congregations, and community college/tribal college/university campuses that engage or seek to engage, with young adults on and off college campuses.

“The Young Adult and Campus Ministry grants help The Episcopal Church live into an expanded understanding of what it means to be in ministry with young adults on and off college campuses,” said the Rev. Shannon Kelly, director for the Department of Faith Formation and officer for Young Adult and Campus Ministries. “Ministry with young adults is constantly being reimagined to respond to the changing nature of this ministry. These ministries invite the church to engage in mission and the Jesus Movement in new, innovative ways.”

Eight Campus Ministry Grants, five Leadership Grants, three Project Grants and five Young Adult Ministry Grants were awarded to 19 dioceses.

Campus Ministry Grants provide seed money to assist in the start-up of new, innovative campus ministries or to enhance a current ministry, such as the Big Tent ministry of the Episcopal Chaplaincy at Harvard, Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts: A liturgical tent serves as a dedicated space for the young adult chaplaincy community, as well as a mobile church that offers possibilities for worship outside the church walls.

Leadership Grants establish new, restore dormant, or reenergize current campus ministries. In the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida, La Iglesia Episcopal at University of Central Florida (UCF) is relaunching the UCF Canterbury Club, a 10-year-old ministry that had gone dormant, as a bilingual, multicultural lay led ministry. The revitalized UCF Canterbury Club will serve universities in Central Florida with a focus on the University of Central Florida and three Puerto Rican universities with campuses in South Orlando.

Project Grants provide money for a one-time project to enhance and positively impact a campus or young adult ministry.  Beloved in the Desert, Episcopal Diocese of Arizona, is an Episcopal Service Corps program that gathers young adults together to pray, serve, and study in community in Tucson, Arizona. With this grant, the 2020-2021 program year will offer formation experience with Borderlinks, providing professional training in border issues, policies, and networks for participants.

Young Adult Ministry Grants provide seed money to assist in the start-up of new, innovative young adult ministries or enhance current ministries. At the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, Episcopal Diocese of Arizona, plans are being developed to establish and launch a community for young adults in Flagstaff called Mosaic, which uses a dinner church model for its primary mode of gathering, cultivating a community of young adults who are willing to wrestle with what church is and dare to believe in what it can be.

Review process

A team of people including the provincial coordinators for campus ministry, leaders in the area of ministry with young adults, staff, and an Executive Council member read, score and comment on the applications. Each application was read by at least three people. All reviewers gathered in person to discern which grants should be funded. The review team worked incredibly hard and faithfully to discern each application and the Department of Faith Formation is deeply grateful for their dedication and hard work.
