Rite I:
Almighty God, who didst raise up thy servant Alcuin as a beacon of learning: Shine in our hearts, we pray, that we may also show forth thy praise in our own generation, for thou hast called us out of darkness and into thy marvelous light; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Rite II:
Almighty God, who raised up your servant Alcuin as a beacon of learning: Shine in our hearts, we pray, that we may also show forth your praise in our own generation, for you have called us out of darkness and into your marvelous light; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. First Lesson: Bel and the Dragon 23–27

²³Now in that place there was a great dragon, which the Babylonians revered. ²⁴The king said to Daniel, ‘You cannot deny that this is a living god; so worship him.’ ²⁵Daniel said, ‘I worship the Lord my God, for he is the living God. ²⁶But give me permission, O king, and I will kill the dragon without sword or club.’ The king said, ‘I give you permission.’

²⁷Then Daniel took pitch, fat, and hair, and boiled them together and made cakes, which he fed to the dragon. The dragon ate them, and burst open. Then Daniel said, ‘See what you have been worshipping!’

Psalm: Psalm 112:1–9

¹ Hallelujah!
  Happy are they who fear the Lord *
       and have great delight in his commandments!
² Their descendants will be mighty in the land; *
       the generation of the upright will be blessed.
³ Wealth and riches will be in their house, *
       and their righteousness will last for ever.
⁴ Light shines in the darkness for the upright; *
       the righteous are merciful and full of compassion.
⁵ It is good for them to be generous in lending *
       and to manage their affairs with justice.
⁶ For they will never be shaken; *
       the righteous will be kept in everlasting remembrance.
⁷ They will not be afraid of any evil rumors; *
       their heart is right;
       they put their trust in the Lord.

Gospel: Matthew 13:24–30

²⁴He put before them another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; ²⁵but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away. ²⁶So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well. ²⁷And the slaves of the householder came and said to him, “Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come from?” ²⁸He answered, “An enemy has done this.” The slaves said to him, “Then do you want us to go and gather them?” ²⁹But he replied, “No; for in gathering the weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them. ³⁰Let both of them grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.” ’
